Jaw pain or also temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction includes chewing muscles, the joint of the jaw.
This is a common presentation that we see.
The jaw joint is surprisingly complex and problems can effect eating, communication and breathing.
Symptoms of TMJ associated disfunction:
Pain in the sinuses
Clicking sounds whilst eating
Biting teeth
Problems with opening or closing of the mouth
Fatigue in the jaw muscles upon waking
Headaches
Dizziness
Facial pain, ache
Tinnitus
What causes jaw pain?
As a result of an accident for example whiplash, sudden movements of the head and neck
Improper movement over time
Structures involved:
Joint capsule
Menisci between the jaw bones
Musculature/ trigger points
Nerves
Lifestyle factors that effect the jaw function:
Negative stress
Postural imbalance
Nerves from the head and neck
Biting of the teeth together during sleep
